With the mat it is 16.5X19.25 inches. Has one tiny area of foxing lower part or the piece or it could be some excess watercolor? Overall in excellent condition. Probably from the 1920s.
Carl Werntz was a painter, did illustration, and photography throughout his lifetime. He founded the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He and his wife traveled extensively to Europe and Asia in the early 19th century until the 1930s. He also traveled to Mexico. Carl studied around 1900 at the Art Institute. Some of his notable teachers were Alphonse Mucha and John Vanderpoel. He also studied in Paris and became interested in Asian and Japanese artwork. He did illustrations for the New York Times and London News.
